Global Warming, Obesity and Corn - The REAL Axis of Evil.

It seems that one of the best ways to fight Global Warming is to wage war on OBESITY and bad food products!

WASHINGTON (AP) — America's obesity epidemic and global warming might not seem to have much in common. But public health experts suggest people can attack them both by cutting calories and carbon dioxide at the same time.

How? Get out of your car and walk or bike half an hour a day instead of driving. And while you're at it, eat less red meat. That's how Americans can simultaneously save the planet and their health, say doctors and climate scientists...

Yeah, baby, that should get the Sean O'Reillys going. But aside from that, you make an excellent point.

Factory farming and particularly raising animals for food is destroying the planet, and it's not just global warming. Frances Moore Lappe's book, Diet for a Small Planet, published more than thirty years ago, was one of the first to make a powerful case for a plant-based diet. There have many others since, along with studies showing the health benefits of eating low on the food chain.

The really great part, though, is that only hippies are paying any attention, so we get to watch the carnivores keel over, one by one. Ha! Mother Nature's going to have the last word after all, guys!!

President Bush's six-year invasion of Afghanistan and Iraq will end up costing Americans about $1.5 trillion, or nearly twice as much as the White House has actually spent to fight its wars, because of unseen costs like inflation, rising oil prices and expensive care for wounded veterans.

The estimate was revealed in a report from Congress's Joint Economic Committee. The staff report, titled "The Hidden Costs of the Iraq War," estimates that the Iraq and Afghan wars have cost the average family more than $20,000.

"The full economic costs of the war to the American taxpayers and the overall U.S. economy go well beyond even the immense federal budget costs already reported," said the report, which was obtained by the Washington Post.

The White House apparently has vastly underestimated the war's costs. It requested $804 billion -- just more than half the total costs -- to keep up its wars and occupations through 2008.

Heck of a job Bushie!

Mr. Gore said he would donate his salary from the venture to the Alliance for Climate Protection, a non-profit policy foundation. Venture capitalist partners also typically earn a managment fee of 2 percent of the amount of money they invest, BUT THE POTENTIAL FOR HOME RUN RETURNS COMES FROM THE 20 PERCENT THEY TAKE OF THE PROFIT WHEN THE STARTUPS THEY INVEST IN GO PUBLIC OR ARE ACQUIRED.

The actual retail price of the Bush Wars: $1.6 trillion, according to a congressional report released yesterday. And this generation of (civilian) Americans has never been asked to sacrifice a single damn thing in order to help ameliorate the cost of these historically expensive war efforts.

In this transcontinental Chinese buffet called America, we don't dig sacrifice anymore. Too effete. Too liberal. We prefer tax cuts for the super rich. We prefer our tax-deductible SUVs and all the gasoline we can bong.

Somehow, according to the most-excellent marketing strategies of Roger Ailes and Karl Rove, it's more patriotic to go around saying you're patriotic than it actually is to be patriotic. The most trenchant right-wing tools among us are proud and grateful to receive the president's unpatriotic and irresponsible rich-man welfare checks during a time of war. In fact, President Bush yesterday listed his tax cuts for the super-rich as one of his successes, while later in the day he accused the Democrats of spending like teenagers with a new credit card.

The Democrats. Spending. Like teenagers. Okay, compared to whom, Mr. President? And yet today the Wall Street Journal -- the economic newspaper of record -- had the old-man nards to editorialize that opponents of the president are insane.

That's rich. The president's ideologically-driven policies have bankrupted America, both financially and morally.

Lee said...

a draft report that warns global warming may have far-reaching and irreversible consequences.

The report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) encapsulates a massive overview of the global-warming problem, with the goal of guiding policymakers for the next five years.

Human activities "could lead to abrupt or irreversible climate changes and impacts."

Shoes4Industry said...

The IPCC experts agreed that the rise in Earth's temperature observed in the past few decades was principally due to human causes, not natural ones, as "climate skeptics" often aver.

LifeBeginsAt200MPH said...

The IPCC is a bunch of whack job scientists who are in it for nothing more than the grant money to finance the carbon credit scam and further their own agenda without regard to the facts.

Shoes4Industry said...

And there's a boogie man around every corner. Who's forcing you to buy "carbon credits" in the first place?

Shoes4Industry said...

Political influence on the IPCC has been documented by the release of a memo by ExxonMobil to the Bush administration, and its effects on the IPCC's leadership. The memo led to strong Bush administration lobbying, evidently at the behest of ExxonMobil, to oust Robert Watson, one of the world's leading climate scientists, from the IPCC chairmanship, and to have him replaced by Pachauri, who was seen at the time as more mild-mannered and industry-friendly. Pachauri's statements on climate change have become stronger since taking the IPCC chairmanship as the scientific evidence has mounted.

Shoes4Industry said...

The key conclusions of the IPCC were that:

* Warming of the climate system is unequivocal.
* Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in anthropogenic (human) greenhouse gas concentrations.
* Anthropogenic warming and sea level rise would continue for centuries due to the timescales associated with climate processes and feedbacks, even if greenhouse gas concentrations were to be stabilized, although the likely amount of temperature and sea level rise varies greatly depending on the fossil intensity of human activity during the next century .
* The probability that this is caused by natural climatic processes alone is less than 5%.

DEAL STRUCK IN La.RACISM JUDGEMENT (LA Times)
Louisiana & New Orleans leaders agreed Tuesday to help the NO DA's officd pay a racial discrimination judgement that the office's beleaguered former hed incurred when he fired white workers and replaced them with blacks.

The 3,4 million judgement stemmed from the actions of former NO Parish District Attorney Eddie Jordan, the first black elected to the position. He resigned in Oct. as state officials contemplated a takeover of his office, which had come under heavy criticism for failing to bring murderers to justice and stem a surge in violent crime after Hurricane Katrina.

After a federal jury found in 2005 that Jordan had fired dozens of white investigators and support staff based on their race, Jordan refused to set aside money for the verdict and fought a losing fight to have it overturned.

Under the deal,NO leaders agreed to provide $1 million. State officials agreeed to contribute $1.6 million and the DA's office promised to put up $300,000 from its coffers.

Even after corruption nearly destroyed their city these "leaders" still didn't learn a lesson.

Racsim: It goes BOTH ways.

Illegal Immigrant Rescues Boy in Desert
2007-11-23 21:00:52
PHOENIX (Nov. 23) - A 9-year-old boy looking for help after his mother crashed their van in the southern Arizona desert was rescued by a man entering the U.S. illegally, who stayed with him until help arrived the next day, an official said.

The 45-year-old woman, who eventually died while awaiting help, had been driving on a U.S. Forest Service road in a remote area just north of the Mexican border when she lost control of her van on a curve on Thanksgiving, Sheriff Tony Estrada said.

The van vaulted into a canyon and landed 300 feet from the road, he said. The woman, from Rimrock, north of Phoenix, survived the impact but was pinned inside, Estrada said.

Her son, unhurt but disoriented, crawled out to get help and was found about two hours later by Jesus Manuel Cordova, 26, of Magdalena de Kino in the northern Mexican state of Sonora. Unable to pull the mother out, he comforted the boy while they waited for help.

The woman died a short time later.

"He stayed with him, told him that everything was going to be all right," Estrada said.

As temperatures dropped, he gave him a jacket, built a bonfire and stayed with him until about 8 a.m. Friday, when hunters passed by and called authorities, Estrada said. The boy was flown to University Medical Center in Tucson as a precaution but appeared unhurt.

Cordova was taken into custody by Border Patrol agents, who were the first to respond to the call for help. He had been trying to walk into the U.S. when he came across the boy.

Cordova likely saved the boy, Estrada said, and his actions should remind people not to quickly characterize illegal immigrants as criminals.

"They do get demonized for a lot of reasons, and they do a lot of good. Obviously this is one example of what an individual can do," he said.

First of all Shoes, you keep confusing victims with criminals - learn the difference.

Yes, we are a country full of immigrants - LEGAL ones. Why is the word ILLEGAL always conventiently left out?

The Republicans love lobbyists and corrpution?... from Derrick Jackson, The Boston Globe -

THE DEMOCRATIC OINKERS

-Four of the top five senators who earmarked money in their states for defense contracts were NOT Republican hawks but LIBEAL and CENTRIST DEMOCRATS - Carl Levin of Michigan, Sen. Clinton and Charles Schumer of New York and Jack Reed of Rhode Island

-Six of the top 10 senators in defense campaign contributions in the 2006 election cycle were DEMOCRATS-Ted Kennedy of Mass., Mrs. Clinton, Chis Dodd of Connecticut, Dianne Feinstein of Cal., Bill Nelson of Florida.

-Last summer, Sen. Kennedy requested $100 MILLIION for a GE fighter eingine the Air Force said IT DID NOT NEED

-The NY Times recently reported that members of the House earmarked an extra $l.8 BILLLION to the military budget for projects the Pentagon DID NOT REQUEST. This is despite cutting earmarks BY HALF. The top earmarker at $166 million was the Chariman of the Defense Appropriations Committee, John Murtha of PA., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of Cal., asked for $32 million and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of MD., requested $26 million

-The same party that complains about Mr. Bush's no-bid contracts for Halliburton in Iraq is willing to maintain this system of funding local companies and program's that also face no competitive bidding

-The Seattle Times detailed last month how Sen. Patty Murray and Reps. Norm Dicks and Brian Baird, ALL DEMOCRATS, earmarked $17.65 million to a boat company for a vessel the Navy DID NOT ASK FOR AND NEVER USED. Mr. Murray also earmarked $6 MILLION to a company for battle gear the Army REJECTED. David Wu, an Oregon DEMOCRAT, earmarked $2 MILLION for combat T-shirts that were banned because their polyester was flammable

-Of 20 leading domestic spending earmarkers in Congress listed by the Times, 12 are DEMOCRATS.

-The Democrats recently handed the Republicans a cultural cudgel when Mrs. Clinton and Mr. Schumer were nailed trying to earmark $1 million for a museum commenorating the 1969 Woodstock concert. USA Today reported that the museum's sponsor gave the Clinton campaign $9,200 and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee $20,000 after the earmark was filed

-Even after Republicans killed earmarks by making a laughing stock of Woodstock, the site of great music and a great amount of drugs, Mr. Schumer had the nerve to say, "I'm proud of the earmarks I've pub in this bill."

I might add I have read numerous articles which have called Big Mouth Murtha "The King of Pork."

So now, what is your point about Republicans loving the lobbyists???

Illegal immigrants not U.S. health care burden:

Illegal Latino immigrants do not cause a drag on the U.S. health care system as some critics have contended and in fact get less care than Latinos in the country legally, researchers said on Monday.

Such immigrants tend not to have a regular doctor or other health-care provider yet do not visit emergency rooms -- often a last resort in such cases -- with any more frequency than Latinos born in the United States, according to the report from the University of California's School of Public Health.

The finding from Alexander Ortega and colleagues at the school was based on a 2003 telephone survey of thousands of California residents, including 1,317 undocumented Mexicans, 2,851 citizens with Mexican immigrant parents, 271 undocumented Latinos from countries other than Mexico and 852 non-Mexican Latinos born in the United States.

About 8.4 million of the 10.3 million illegal aliens in the United States are Latino, of which 5.9 million are from Mexico, the report said.

"One recurrent theme in the debate over immigration has been the use of public services, including health care," Ortega's team wrote in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"Proponents of restrictive policies have argued that immigrants overuse services, placing an unreasonable burden on the public. Despite a scarcity of well-designed research ... use of resources continues to be a part of the public debate," they said.

The researchers said illegal Mexican immigrants had 1.6 fewer visits to doctors over the course of a year than people born in the country to Mexican immigrants. Other undocumented Latinos had 2.1 fewer physician visits than their U.S.-born counterparts, they said.

"Low rates of use of health-care services by Mexican immigrants and similar trends among other Latinos do not support public concern about immigrants' overuse of the health care system," the researchers wrote.

"Undocumented individuals demonstrate less use of health care than U.S.-born citizens and have more negative experiences with the health care that they have received," they said.

Specifically, the "consensus" about anthropogenic climate change entails the following:

1) the climate is undergoing a pronounced warming trend beyond the range of natural variability;
2) the major cause of most of the observed warming is rising levels of the greenhouse gas CO2;
3) the rise in CO2 is the result of burning fossil fuels;
4) if CO2 continues to rise over the next century, the warming will continue; and
5) a climate change of the projected magnitude over this time frame represents potential danger to human welfare and the environment.
